a response
Glossary is a response to "art magazine" as thing, as entity.
In this current state of publishing affairs, one hard fact remains: there is still so much art to write about. Glossary approaches its content as a curated project space in the form of an art review magazine. It is for viewers to engage with art in meaningful and innovative ways; to look, to read and to share. Glossary is a response to language. Language is multi-faceted. What is art "saying" to us? Glossary appeals to a mindful readership through three modes of language: visuals, vocabulary and prose. Writing about art is important, not only for artists and galleries, but also for viewers. Glossary illuminates the work, beyond first glance. Glossary is a response to reading. As a lover of language, semantics and etymology, Glossary is rigorous and eloquent, but also interactive and playful. How do you "read" art? The reviews in Glossary respond to art through a creative lens: Review as Pictures is a visual means of archiving and acknowledging exhibitions, allowing for reader interpretation; Review as Glossary defines vocabulary, building ways to talk about and contextualize art; and Review as Critique are candid visual analyses offering a deeper look and thoughtful read. |
Glossary is a response to the publishing process.
Freelance writers send lists of potential reviews to various publications that they write for. On average, three shows are pitched, of which the editor will select only one or two. Many times they decline. What about the shows that don't get chosen for coverage? By increasing the press coverage of the Bay Area, we can expect that others will follow suit and support the artists who live here, the work being made here, and the venues that show it. Glossary is a response to labor politics. Glossary understands that writing magazine content is not always a labor of love, of which the colloquialism presumes is work done for free. Without good content, a publication will fail. "Compensation" for good content (work) comes in tangible and intangible forms; too often interchangeable, too easily leveraged against writers' tangible value: their writing. Collaboration and support between writers, editors, publications and venues is vital. We are all valuable. Let's meet. |
